Radio Basics course

You’re interested in radio and would like to broadcast regularly on FREIRAD?

By attending the course on the basics of radio you will be making your first step towards fulfilling that goal. Here you can learn about media related skills from experts. You will be discussing your stance towards media and your listening habits. You will be learning about the importance of media ethics and how media can protect or endanger democracy. You will receive insight into the history of community radios, as well as the foundations of a journalistic work process and the importance of the Charter of Austrian Community radios for creating your own radio content and with that your own shows. And exactly that is the next step: planning and creating your own radio show.

The following questions will be answered during the course for basics of radio:

• How do I find a topic for my show?
• What do I say during the introduction?
• How do I write a text that is meant to be heard rather than read?
• How do I record conversations and interviews?
• How do I prepare and conduct an interesting interview?
• How do recording devices work and how can I record using them?
• Which journalistic format fits the content I wish to present?
• What role does music play in my show?
• How do I edit my recordings?
• How does a mixer console work?

In short: How do I create my own radio show in terms of technology and content?

The 2-day course concludes with a live broadcast done by you and the other participants. And we are on air in 3…2…1…

The course for basics of radio is one of two key components on the way to your very own radio show(s).

Basics course =
radio basics course + introductory workshop for media and copyright laws

Along with the 10 hour workshop described above, all radio hosts at FREIRAD must also attend a 2,5 hour introductory workshop into media and copyright laws.
